Vodafone most accountable big business in Iberia

06/11/2009

Mobile telecommunications giant Vodafone is the most accountable of the largest companies in Spain and Portugal, according to the results of recent Accountability Rating research.

Vodafone topped the 2009 Accountability Rating for Spain as well as a combined ranking of the largest companies in Iberia (Spain and Portugal).

Meanwhile, the 2009 Accountability Rating for Portugal was headed by energy company EDP, as was also the case when the rating was applied in Portugal in 2008. EDP was rated overall number two in Iberia.

The studies of the largest 25 companies in both Spain and Portugal were carried out by Portuguese consultancy Sair da Casca under licence from Two Tomorrows, the global sustainability consultancy that owns the Accountability Rating methodology.

Because this is the second year in succession that the Accountability Rating has been applied in Portugal, Sair da Casca has been able to make some comparisons over time in the accountability performance of the country’s largest companies. Their findings include:
There has been a marked improvement in the average Accountability Rating score, which reflects a commitment by companies to provide information about their practices, actions and plans in a transparent and objective way.

There have been particularly encouraging improvements in the utilities and petroleum sectors.

The effort made by financial services companies to improve the definition of strategic commitments, information disclosure and stakeholder engagement is noticeable, especially in a year when there has been so much attention on the sector.

Rui Loureiro, CEO of SDC, states: “The global context has reinforced the importance of accountability in companies, mainly in sectors that are experiencing more pressure. The economic, social and environmental impacts of corporations must be in the centre of their business strategies.”
