NokiaNokia

Ranked 6 in 2008 global Accountability Rating

Nokia is the highest-ranking newcomer to the Fortune Global 100.

Its commendable initiatives include:

  • Development of a phone made from recyclable material.
  • Industry-leading substance and product lifecycle management: first mobile phone manufacturer which, in close cooperation with its suppliers, fully declared all materials included in mobile devices.
  • Developed the world’s first mobile carbon offsetting application.
  • Extensive monitoring and training for suppliers, focused on Nokia’s supplier requirements which cover labour conditions and rights, health and safety in the workplace, design for the environment, and substance management.
  • Nokia also publishes an overview of breaches of the supplier requirements, including information on remedial action plans.
  • Detailed disclosure of environmental impacts of operations over time, with most major metrics showing considerable improvements.
  • Open discussion and engagement with Dutch social-activist group SOMO, following the group’s allegations of labour-rights violations in Nokia’s supply chain.
