Notable aspects of HBOS’s accountability performance include:

• HBOS offers two products exclusively to customers buying their home from the most sustainable homebuilders. These products have support from WWF for such products.
• Provision of ‘green loans’ that offset three tonnes of CO2 for each one taken out, and a similar ‘green mortgage’.
• HBOS became the first major bank in Europe to carbon label a financial services product, its Web Saver account, which is used by more than 1.1 million people. It is working with the Carbon Trust to pilot a method of calculating all greenhouse gas emissions from the Web Saver account from the initial application to customers’ transactions.
• HBOS is a major lender to renewable energy projects. It has worked with key sponsors in the renewables sector to provide finance for around 3,500 megawatts of renewable energy. Projects have included wind farms, landfill gas, biomass, waste-to-energy and small-scale hydroelectric projects.
